Preparing For Your Headshot
Clothing
The best route to go is to keep it simple. When you think out about what you’re going to wear, keep in mind that for a headshot, it is only going to be an image of your head and shoulders - so it really just comes down to the shoulders and neckline. Solid colors/neutrals are typically my go-to choice since it helps keep the focus on you.
Try to wear:
• clothing you love and you feel great in
• clothes that are one solid color or shade
• layer options; a jacket, blazer or sweater that works well with your top
• if you plan on wearing a tie, definitely bring a few options
Try not to wear:
• overbearing/distracting patterns
• baggy, loose clothing, puffy sleeves
• asymmetrical/single shoulder tops
• wrinkled clothing
• clothes that don't fit
Hair + Makeup
Please ensure your hair is styled as you would like to appear in your pictures. You are in charge here because hair is deeply personal, and it's crucial that you feel like your authentic self.
Men, please arrive with your facial hair as you wish to have captured.
If you wear makeup daily, please continue reading; if not, this may not be relevant for you.
I recommend keeping your makeup simple and sticking close to your usual routine. You can always add more makeup during the session, so feel free to bring a makeup kit with you. I shoot connected to a laptop so, we can review images in real-time in case you want to make any adjustments.
Additionally, my retouching process includes blemish removal and skin softening, so there's no need to worry if you happen to have a breakout the day before.
Jewelry:
As with clothing, jewelry should be kept to a minimum so that it does not distract from the focus of the headshot which is you. Unless it is an item you wear on a daily basis, I suggest leaving it at home in the jewelry box.
